Description
The United States saw its first confirmed case of H1N1 in April 2009, (1) and by June of that year every U.S. state reported confirmed cases. (2) That same month, the World Health Organization declared H1N1 a pandemic. (3) In August, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) predicted approximately 3,600 deaths associated with H1N1 in the coming months. (4) The total was far less than predicted, thankfully, totaling 105 in Illinois between April 5, 2009, and March 26, 2010, and an estimated 12,007 between April 2009 and February 13, 2010 in the United States. (5) To put this number in perspective, seasonal flu alone "causes about 36,000 deaths annually in the U.S. and 200,000 hospitalizations, mainly in people over 65 years of age." (6)
